Rwanda: Reserved Rwf1 Billion to Prevent Cloudburst in Musanze and Nyabihu

NEW AFRICA DAILY NEWS (NADN) Freetown, Sierra Leone- The Administration of Rwanda will expend at slight Rwf1 billion on the repair of Mugogo lowland in Musanze and further locales in Nyabihu region that were devastated by torrents. This comes up this; intervention to resuscitate increases from multi-billion project in Musanze and Nyabihu neighborhoods which were being endangered by storms.

Heeding continual flooding in the two districts, in 2014 the administration commenced to execute a $10 million project intended for, at creating modification to climate change effects. This was suggested to save the lowland on seventy-five hectares that have recently become a lake due to continual flooding.

Nonetheless, for four years until 2018, the growers had been profiting from the project with bumper harvests of maize, Irish potatoes, vegetables, sorghum, and other crops.

Going forward, in 2019; agribusiness activities were curtailed as the lowland was also streams The recurrence of flooding was due to a scarcity of local inhabitants’ possession as well as the economic capacity to sustain the achievements. In addendum, it’s as a dearth of routine supervision of the infrastructure to prevent flooding. And it is against this background that, government through the two districts has again allotted Rwf1 billion to recoup the area from storms.

Musanze Economic Development Deputy Mayor – Andrew Mpuhwe Rucyahana said, that the actions to contain rains encompass building drainages and de-silting caves in Mugogo lowland located. Rwf300 million will be paid in Musanze District and Rwf700 million in Nyabihu.

“The project to revive the flooded area comes with particular intervention which include tackling sources of floods in Nyabihu District which end up submerging this lowland in Musanze District,” he explained.

In order to prevent references of storms in Nyabihu, he noted more trees will be planted, porches on plantations and drainages on roads will be constructed among other activities including rainwater harvesting.

One of the floods sources to be managed is Kinoni River from Nyabihu District that ends up sinking into the grottoes in Musanze and when the passages are enclosed by sediments, the water floods the marshland.

On the side of Musanze, at least twenty subways that maintain surging water from Kinoni River must be de-silted while restoration of ravines in the watershed, maintaining the drainage networks, and channels leading to the flooding of the area will be carried out under the project.

“We want the project to have particularity. It means even after it closes, there must be ownership of citizens in partnership with local leaders to ensure regular maintenance of infrastructure containing the floods. Farmers must always save part of their income from farming to support the regular maintenance and make the project achievements sustainable,” the official asserted.

Nyabihu is one of the most flood exposed districts in Rwanda. Recent floods and landslides that killed over seventy people urged President Kagame to visit the area. An announcement by the Ministry in charge of Emergency Management reveals that, a sequel of flood-prone destroyed at least 3,117 hectares of crops, 124 roads and 64 bridges disrupting economic activities across the country between January and April 2020. And it’s believed that by May 2020, over 200 people have died while over 225 sustained injuries.

Over 3,082 houses were destroyed leaving thousands of families ejected while 3,227 domestic animals died of disasters.

Virtually, thirty-six classrooms, one health center, twelve churches, ten administrative houses, thirteen water supply infrastructures that disrupted water supply in some areas, and one market were damaged by disasters. And the severe weather events also destroyed sixty-one electricity infrastructures.
