Nigeria and Egypt: Autographed an MoU to Bolster the Growth of Water Resource Management programmes in Africa

NEW AFRICA DAILY NEWS (NADN) Freetown, Sierra Leone– The duo agreed on the MoU on past Tuesday on the circumstance of the ongoing 7th Cairo Water Week in Egypt. Joseph Utsev – Nigeria’s Minister of Water Resources, and Hani Sewilam, his counterpart from Egypt, autographed the pact.

The MoU schedules to bolster alliance between the two nations in embracing, developing, and managing water resources to foster their citizens.

It same plans to accelerate irrigation infrastructure maintenance as well as innovative mechanical and biological methods for controlling aquatic weeds.

The consensus equally addresses flood management, drought forecasting, the advancement of water harvesting technologies, and technical assistance in groundwater management.

The MoU will assure water resource governance and security, climate change adaptation, food security, and the restoration and protection of freshwater resources.

Utsev noted, the partnership is anticipated to heighten irrigation farming, enable food security, increase hydropower generation, and ensure the regular maintenance of dams and reservoirs in Nigeria.

Sewilam remarked, the MoU would strengthen the existing relationship between Nigeria and Egypt, emphasizing that Egypt is committed to enabling cooperation with other African nations on water and climate change issues.

He extended that, the MoU aims to unleash Africa’s water challenges and the impacts of climate change.

He noted, as the president of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), Egypt understands the desire for cooperative solutions to manage shared water resources, which serve billions of people worldwide. He beckoned for effective international agreements grounded in fairness, harm prevention, and mutual benefit, reiterating Egypt’s commitment to fostering collaboration in managing trans boundary waters.
