NEW AFRICA DAILY NEWS (NADN) Freetown, Sierra Leone- Apple agribusiness in the nation was a challenge as an outcome of adverse climate factors, Botswana’s Ministry of Agriculture noted. The just enlisted variations, which encompass Anna, Golden Dorset and Pink Lady apples, could endure hot summers and winter sleet, according to the company supplying the apple trees.

A spokesperson told the Ministry had inaugurated a fresh technique for horticulture, expanding that it was anticipated to likewise encourage apple agriculture.

“Apple production is included as an important avenue for investment by private investors,” the Ministry said in an announcement.

Tomapple Investments – a Botswana-based company, was trustworthy for producing apple tree seedlings acceptable for local conditions. In a statement, the company said it was convinced the nation would see a boost in the number of planters investing into commercial apple production, thereby lessening dependence on imports of the fruit.

According to the firm, data from major commercial ducts in Botswana had implied a need for a minimum of 10 apples per week. These were presently introduced, primarily from South Africa.

“Based on results achieved by many farmers during the past five years, it will be possible to stop importing apples and consume locally grown apples.

“For the past five years, almost 10 000 trees have been supplied to different farmers across the country. To […] produce the volume of apples needed to meet annual demand, and to also cater for locally produced apple products such as apple juice, apple cider vinegar, and dried fruit, we need to plant at least 20 000 apple trees, […]” a Director of Tomapple Investments, Thomas Jaravaza, let out.

Aspirant apple farmer, Tiroyaone Molefe, announced that pilot projects using the new cultivar proved very successful in the nation.
