NEW AFRICA DAILY NEWS (NADN) Freetown, Sierra Leone – He was the first black head of state and was the first elected President in a fully democratic election in South Africa.

According to reports, Nelson Mandela day is empirical on July 18th every year by the United Nations(UN). The UN had in 2009 proclaimed July 18th as Nelson Mandela Day to respect the freedom fighter – Madeba. The Day inspires his transitional strides to thwart multiracial democracy in South Africa.

The day was first commemorated on July 18th, 2010 on the 92nd birthday of Mandela, to celebrate the achievements of the anti-apartheid leader. To streak the first celebration of Mandela Day, fundraising programs, art exhibitions, and music concerts were organized.

The theme for the Nelson Mandela International Day 2023 is “Climate, Food & Solidarity”. The UN calls on partners and the public to take action against climate change and create food-resilient environments in solidarity with communities across the world encountering disaster due to climate change. This year, the call to action is, “It’s in your hands”.

Nelson Mandela Day symbolizes the significance of serving humankind and working for those who cannot fight on their own. Mandela Day is an accepted call to action which commemorates the notion that each individual has the strength to give rise to a change and make an effect on society. This day carries advantage of a significant position in respecting the heritage of Nelson Mandela, the past South African President.

It’s believed that this day is similarly known as ‘46664 ’ and was initially inaugurated to establish awareness about HIV/AIDS. 46664 was a series of AIDS benefit concerts played in his appreciation by South African and foreign musicians between 2003 and 2008.

In November 2009, the UN General Assembly announced July 18th as ‘Nelson Mandela International Day to acknowledge the former South African President’s assistance to the culture of peace and freedom in society. He was not only the outstanding democratically elected black president but moreover a man with tremendous ambitions to renovate the world. This day declares his fight against poverty, gender inequality, racism, and the abolition of human rights. UN’s resolution A/RES/64/13 observes Mandela’s significances and his lifelong commitment to the service of humanity.
