NEW AFRICA DAILY NEWS (NADN) Freetown, Sierra Leone–  The event organized by the Association of Kenyan Diaspora Organizations, Inc., slates to bolster relations between entrepreneurs, investors, government officials, and industry experts to explore trade and investment alternatives within the diaspora community. According to a message sent to the organizing committee’s Chairman, four members of parliament—Richard Momoima Onyonka, Okiya Omutatah, Carren Nyamu, and Dr. Manduku are unable to travel to the United States.

Diverse reasons have been referenced, encircling withheld passports and lack of executive clearance. The sole guest who has managed to travel is Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee who is slated to deliver the keynote address.

Current events have added complexity to the situation, as Senators Onyonka and Okiya have been vocal about alleged scandals involving high-ranking officials in President William Ruto’s administration. These allegations, specifically regarding the controversial Adani takeover, have blown intense debate in Kenya’s media and parliament, with many netizens questioning the transparency of the 30-year leasing agreement. Despite these setbacks, the organizing committee remains committed to proceeding with the trade fair. They are actively encouraging diaspora community members to attend in large numbers, emphasizing the networking opportunities with stakeholders from various sectors, including real estate, banking, and manufacturing.

The summit, taking place at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest in Brooklyn Park from September 27th to 28th, carries the theme “Leveraging the Diaspora – The Frontier Gateway for Partnerships and Growth.” This theme reiterates the vital role of the diaspora in promoting economic development and fostering partnerships between their adopted countries and their homeland. The event’s program features a diverse range of activities, including panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions. Attendees have the opportunity to gain insights from industry experts on current trends and prospects in key sectors.

In addition, the summit provides a platform for diaspora retinues to showcase their products and services, potentially attracting investors and collaborators. Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee’s keynote speech is anticipated, with expectations that he will address the challenges and chances facing the Kenyan diaspora. The absence of the four parliamentarians has raised concerns amongst diaspora members, provoking questions about the Kenyan government’s support for diaspora initiatives. While expressing disappointment over the travel restrictions, the organizing committee maintains a positive outlook regarding the event’s overall success.
