NEW AFRICA DAILY NEWS (NADN) Freetown, Sierra Leone– The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) Director for the Eastern Region – Kenneth Boymanda, remarked on April 6th, 2024, that challenges are ongoing, after which the second plant, denoted as plant number eight, will be activated.

“We have completed the dry tests, and wet tests, which involve the rotation of the machinery, are currently in progress. Electrical tests will follow, paving the way for the activation of the plant’s second unit,” he said.

Boymanda stated that, in some circumstances, they were urged to put on hold the trials thus; to an influx of overflowing water in the plant.

El Nino rains that continue to pound most parts of Tanzania are reportedly filling up the dam at a quick speed.

Tanzania is driving forward with the project, which will generate 2,115 megawatts upon completion.

In March of 2024, the plant began contributing 235 megawatts to the national grid, drastically decreasing power rationing. It is anticipated to entirely end rationing when the second turbine comes online pretty soon enough.

Boymanda noted, the second turbine will generate another 235 megawatts.

The administration has retained its strides to the project, show casing its potential to bring much-needed electricity to the nation.

Previously, the Deputy Prime Minister, who same…the Minister for Energy – Doto Biteko, asked the administration’s dedication in assuring all future hydroelectric projects adhere to water sustainability principles.

He same cataloged schedules for further diversifying the nation’s energy sources through investments in gas, solar, wind, and geothermal power.

With nine turbines, the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant is geared to transform Tanzania’s energy landscape, potentially navigating to an additional of electricity and paving the way for further financial growth.
