NEW AFRICA DAILY NEWS (NADN) Accra GHANA- Executive Secretary of the Ghana Poultry Farmers Association (GPFA) – Lawrence A. Tetteh spoke out to the media during a workshop to address the situation.

Tetteh accentuated that the dearth of maize in local markets has driven up costs, taking off thousands of poultry birds underfed and jeopardizing the viability of 80% of poultry granges nationwide.

The GPFA has carried assertive measures to rescue the remaining 20% of ranches from collapse.

The workshop in the Volta Region concentrated on enabling cage-free poultry planting procedures as a scheme to optimize proceeds and enrich the grade of egg and meat production.

He exhorted government intervention to authorize maize imports, which are necessary to stabilize the poultry industry and prevent further financial downturns.

Dr. Daniel Abiliba, Director of the Animal Welfare League, underscored the significance of animal welfare in poultry farming and endorsed the battery-cage system. He pointed out that this method prohibits movement and makes an agreement on the quality of poultry products.

Reverberating global tendencies, Dr. Abiliba emphasized the need for Ghanaian growers to adopt cage-free methods, which will guarantee healthier and more productive poultry.

Dr. Emmanuel Piiru, Programme Manager of the Animal Welfare League, brought out the unfavorable consequences of overcrowding in battery-cage systems, which usher to health issues and inferior product quality.

He yelled for prioritizing bird welfare to sweeten the all-around production standards of eggs and chicken.

The workshop organizers were lauded for their endeavor to revamp the skills and knowledge of poultry farmers, which is critical for steering the existing challenges and transitioning toward sustainable farming practices.

As poultry agriculturalists in Ghana encounter the maize shortage crisis, the transition towards cage-free farming methods illustrates an essential step towards breathing life into the industry and assuring long-term viability.
