NEW AFRICA DAILY NEWS (NADN) Freetown, Sierra Leone– Amadou Ba – Senegal’s ruling confidante has beckoned the opposition’s Bassirou Diomaye Faye to attain victory in Sunday’s presidential election, a government official stated.
Unofficial results asserted that, Faye had a crystal lead over Ba. Faye had been in prison ten days before the vote and campaigned on the vow of radical change.
Official results are anticipated in the coming days from the election which was primarily due last month.
The vote marshalled months of political brouhaha in one of Africa’s most steadied democratic nations after outgoing President Macky Sall endeavored to postpone the election until December of 2024.
Few of the other 15 candidates had literally conceded. President Sall same, congratulated Faye and remarked that it was a win for the people of Senegal.
Faye is a senior retinue of the Pastef Party, led by Ousmane Sonko, the popular figure who many thoughts would succeed Sall.
Thus, Sonko was barred from the election because of a defamation conviction, which he said was politically motivated. Sonko backed Faye’s bid for the presidency.
The first set of results announced on television overnight showing that Faye had won a majority of the votes counted up to that point, sparked street celebrations in the capital, Dakar.
